About Me

Get to know me

My name is Joseph Jungermann, and I am a graduate of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. I have over eight years of writing and editing experience. I began my career in 2016 as a sports reporter covering major sports leagues in the United States. At CUNY, I specialized as a data and investigative journalist covering urban politics, criminal justice, social issues and housing. In the summer of 2020, I spent time as a data journalist intern for Kansas City non-profit outlet The Beacon. I wrote an investigative piece on police use-of-force that influenced law-enforcement policy change. I have been a college assistant for CUNY, helping to teach students in a fundamentals of data journalism course. I am currently a deputy research manager for The Real Deal, where I use my data and reporting skills to bring transparency to the nation’s complex real estate market.

Work Experience

Deputy Research Manager @ The Real Deal December 2024 - Present

I lead the production of the magazine's primary real estate rankings across major U.S. markets, including New York, Los Angeles, South Florida, Chicago and Texas. My work includes using SQL and Python to programmatically aggregate and analyze large datasets from city property records registers, the Department of Buildings and other databases while communicating with sources to author featured projects. I build custom, interactive visualizations using Datawrapper and JavaScript for the publication's online stories.

Researcher @ The Real Deal April 2021 - November 2024

Led the production of featured articles for the magazine's main real estate broker and brokerage rankings that have totaled over 10,000 reads, 500 subscriptions and thousands of dollars in ad revenue to date. I used PostgreSQL to query internal databases and Python’s Pandas library to produce weekly, data-driven articles of 300-500 words each on industry news, market shifts and trends. I averaged 1,500 unique views and 1-5 new subscribers per story.

Researcher @ Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism Center for Community Media January 2021 - March 2021

With a team of two other researchers, I organized and created an outreach program intended to educate and encourage New York City 2021 election candidates, consultants, independent expenditure committees and advocacy groups to advertise in Center for Community Media (CCM) member newspapers and digital platforms. I informed our publisher members what actions they can take to secure advertising dollars in the 2021 NYC Primary elections and functioned as an ambassador between publishers and candidate advertisers.

College Assistant @ Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism August 2020 - December 2020

Assisted first-semester students in the mandatory fall 2020 course: Fundamentals of Data Journalism. Offered two weekly office-hours blocks for students and clarified questions about pre-class learning modules that covered HTML, CSS, Excel, Datawrapper and mapping software.

Data/Investigative Reporting Intern @ The Beacon Summer 2020

Reported on criminal justice in the Kansas City Metro Area and used data tools such as Python and Jupyter Notebooks software to analyze 20 years of police fatal-encounter data. Filed 20 freedom of information requests and wrote a 1,200-word investigative piece on the lack of police use-of-force policies that resulted in civilian deaths.

Reporter @ NYCity News Service August 2019 - December 2020

Student reported and wrote for Craig Newmark School of Journalism at CUNY publication. Covered Jamaica, N.Y., community district 12.

Writer @ 12up Sports (Minute Media) September 2017 - January 2019

Wrote an average of 15 articles per day for an active social media audience. Produced over 2,000 articles covering all major sports leagues resulting in over 20 million reads.

On-Call Editor @ Bleacher Report (Turner Broadcasting) August 2016 - March 2017

Edited 3-5 articles per hour in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom covering the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. Crafted SEO-friendly headlines and captions that increased audience engagement by an average 500 reads per piece.
